New Study Demonstrates the Healing Power of Art Therapy

Featured in the February 2018 volume of The Arts in Psychotherapy, “Art therapy improves mood, and reduces pain and anxiety when offered at bedside during acute hospital treatment,” by Tamara A.Shella, the study followed 195 patients that were hospitalized for a variety of conditions.

The study found that a typical 50-minute art therapy session significantly reduced pain, mood and anxiety levels, regardless of gender, age or diagnosis. Moreover, the type of media (primarily paint, beads, and mixed media) was not found to make a difference.
